In London Magazine investigated the potential of vitamins to help the skin in its article:
“The Vit Kit”
Vitamins have become a popular addition to skincare products across the spectrum of brands and budgets. But do they do anything when applied to the skin or is it better to have a supplements or just a healthy balanced diet?
In London asked Dr Ross Perry, skin expert and founder of Cosmedics Beauty, to give his expert advice and opinion.
He started by explaining the difference between supplements :
“For people with a balanced diet, and who therefore aren’t vitamin-deficient, ingesting supplements has little effect.
“Topical application, on the other hand, can help with everything from reducing sun damage to improving collagen.”
So which vitamins are worth considering and what do they do?
Commonly found in fruit and veg, vitamin C is also a favourite in skincare. Dr Perry explains why:
“Vitamin C is rich in antioxidants. So it can reduce the effects that free radicals have on our skin.”
This means that it could help to combat the effects of sun damage and pollution, helping to keep the skin looking healthier.
Vitamin A is best known for its anti-ageing properties. Ross explains:
“Vitamin A is excellent for stimulating collagen production”
Boosting collagen gives the skin a firmer and tighter texture, adding volume and helping to smooth out lines and wrinkles.
Vitamin A or retinol based products are best used at night to help reduce sebum production and stimulate collagen
Like vitamin C, vitamin E helps to inhibit the production of damaging free radicals. Topical application of vitamin C and E helps reduce sun damage by its antioxidant properties in reducing free radicals that damage and weaken our collagen
It also helps to protect the skin’s essential lipids and fatty acids to aid hydration and help to restore the skin’s healthy glow.
The right vitamin-enriched skincare products could be of benefit for a host of purposes. Ross says:
“Start to think of vitamin-enriched products as another essential tool in your skin armoury”
