Acids in Skin Care

skincare acid peelMSN Lifestyle examines the use of acids in skincare formulas and skin treatments with advice from skin expert Dr Ross Perry.

There are a number of different acids used in skin care preparations. Dr Perry, founder of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, explains some of the best known and most effective options.

Glycolic Acid

Dr. Ross Perry says:

Glycolic acid is derived from plant sugar and is used as a gentle exfoliator, acting at the skin’s surface to dissolve the outer layer of grime, grease, and build-up, revealing fresher and brighter skin cells beneath.

It can be found in some products like cleansers and masks, or in stronger formulations such as ‘chemical peels’ in salons and clinics.

Just be wary as overuse can lead to redness and sensitivities – but mandelic acid has similar exfoliating properties, and tends to be less aggressive and gentler on the skin.

Salicylic Acid

Dr. Ross Perry says:

This acid is primarily used as an exfoliant, but tends to be more intensive than AHA formulations like glycolic acid. For example, in professional peels, salicylic acid can help to improve acne by clearing pores and tackling blackheads and whiteheads.

There are home-use products containing salicylic acid in lower concentrations. It is very effective as an occasional treatment or course of treatments, but overuse on a regular basis can upset the skin.

Niacinamide Acid

(vitamin B3)

This substance is a powerful anti-inflammatory which works to promote a healthy clear skin.

It can be very helpful for those with acne/rosacea, but also has good anti-ageing properties, as it can promote skin repair and hydration.

It can also brighten the complexion and improve pigmentation problems.

Other Acids in Skin Care

Other acids explained in the article include:

  • Retinoid acid (derived from vitamin A, usually used on prescription for treating pigmentation)
  • Hyaluronic acid (used for adding volume and smoothing the skin)
  • Ascorbic acid (antioxidant used in serums and other skin care)
